Pharmacognosy and medicinal plants department is one of the important specialized departments , as pharmacognosy is one of the oldest basic sciences of pharmacy, which was based on the rest of the sciences to manufacture herbal medicines. In accordance to the general policy of the College of Pharmacy for Excellence in the field of teaching and scientific research, the pharmacognosy department is constantly seeking to develop its academic plan that achieves the college’s goals in general and the department goals in particular to keep pace with developments in this field. The department aims to establish female students with a strong scientific basis in pharmacognosy science, medical plants, therapeutic drug monitoring, public health, pharmacy ethics, as well as the basic curricula of medical physics, mathematics, computer, democracy, human rights and Al-Baath crimes, and we seek to prepare students capable of keeping pace with the development in the production of medicines, which enhances the status of Iraqi pharmacy colleges and support and service the society.

Confronting the current and future needs to practice pharmacy and conducting continuous research on new treatments to deal with endemic diseases by providing safe and effective natural drugs.
Goals
- The department is concerned with the college graduates with the types of medicinal plants, studying them in terms of classification, shape, active ingredients and pharmaceutical effects and their creation inside the plant and linking medicinal products with classified chemical compounds.
- Knowledge of the graduate is concerned with the importance of products derived from natural plants in the field of biotic medicine, evaluating the active ingredients of plants and using extraction methods
